Coffee and Cigarettes

An anthology of the short films that director Jim Jarmusch began making in 1986. There are eleven of them and they all have in common conversations at a table where cigarettes are smoked and coffee cups emptied. Some of the vignettes are pointless, others funny and somewhat insightful. Two of the best show Hollywood in a negative light, especially the one where Alfred Molina comes with a surprise for the less-than-impressed Steve Coogan. Bill Murray also has an absurd meeting with rappers from the Wu-Tang Clan. It sure is an uneven film, but worth a coffee break or two.

2004-U.S. 96 min. B/W. Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. Cast: Roberto Benigni (Roberto), Steven Wright (Steven), Joie Lee (Good Twin), Cinqué Lee, Steve Buscemi, Iggy Pop… Tom Waits, Cate Blanchett, Alfred Molina, Steve Coogan, Bill Murray.
