hosteljpgThree backpackers, two Americans and one Icelander, go to a small village near Bratislava where the local hostel is chock-full of hot women who want to have sex. It’s a trap, of course. This grisly horror movie, vaguely reminiscent of The Wicker Man (1973), takes forever to build suspense, portrays Eastern Europeans as twisted animals and takes special delight in torturing its characters in the bloodiest, most awful ways possible. But it’s not without humor and tension, and Jay Hernandez is fairly engaging.

2006-U.S. 95 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Eli Roth. Cast: Jay Hernandez (Paxton), Derek Richardson (Josh), Eythor Gudjonsson (Oli), Barbara Nedeljáková, Jan Vlasák.

Trivia: Co-executive-produced by Boaz Yakin and Quentin Tarantino. Followed by two sequels, starting with Hostel: Part II (2007).
