Code Name: Emerald

TRAINED BY THE AMERICANS. TRUSTED BY THE NAZIS.

In 1944, a young officer (Eric Stoltz) is captured by the Germans who try to figure out if he’s one of the few who know the details surrounding the expected Allied invasion; a double agent (Ed Harris) is sent to shut him up. Director Jonathan Sanger’s debut has exciting ingredients and tries to portray the intellectual games behind the battlefield bloodbaths in a realistic way. However, there isn’t much tension here (in spite of a more action-filled climax) and Harris remains just an attractive hero rather than an ambiguous, complex double agent.

1985-U.S. 95 min. Color. Directed by Jonathan Sanger. Screenplay, Novel: Ronald Bass (“The Emerald Illusion”). Cast: Ed Harris (Gus Lang), Max von Sydow (Jürgen Brausch), Horst Buchholz (Walter Hoffman), Helmut Berger, Cyrielle Claire, Eric Stoltz… Patrick Stewart.
