THE BATTLE BETWEEN THE GOOD AND THE BAD IS BOUND TO GET UGLY.
A documentary film crew is covering a beauty pageant in Minnesota; a one-time winner (Kirstie Alley) will do anything to make her daughter (Denise Richards) the new queen. This is a frustratingly uneven film; tasteful it ain’t, but there are moments when the silliness is hard to resist. The screenwriter knows what she’s doing because she is herself a former beauty queen; the atmosphere feels genuine enough. Kirsten Dunst and Richards do their parts justice and some of the supporting characters are nutty enough to make you laugh.
