TORN BETWEEN HIS WIFE, A SEDUCTRESS AND A PET SKUNK… PRIVATE EYE IN DANGER OF SPREADING HIMSELF TOO THIN!
Private eye Ned Ravine (Armand Assante), who also happens to be a cop and a defense attorney, is attracted to saucy blonde Lola Cain (Sean Young); his wife (Kate Nelligan) eventually starts plotting against him. The 1990s saw many films inspired by the spoofs produced in the previous decade by the goofballs behind Airplane!. Director Carl Reiner’s work targets the film-noir genre and allows two decades to clash, the 1990s and the 1940s. It has its moments. Assante is seldom seen in comedies, but he is ideal in a Leslie Nielsen-type part as a dim-witted but versatile crime fighter.
