K-19 The Widowmaker

FATE HAS FOUND ITS HERO.

k19The kind of Hollywood pic where ‚ÄĚRussians‚ÄĚ speak American English‚Ķ which is perhaps preferable to fake accents. Director Kathryn Bigelow made a decent but overlong, unremarkable thriller set in 1961, just prior to the Cuban missile crisis. Based on a real incident, it shows how nasty a reactor crisis on a nuke sub can be. Harrison Ford probably saw his chance to do a more complex hero than usual as the earnest commander who at first gives his crew Queeg vibes, but turns out to be a man who just takes his job very seriously.

2002-U.S. 138 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow. Cast: Harrison Ford (Mikhail Polenin), Liam Neeson (Alexei Vostrikov), Peter Sarsgaard (Vadim), Joss Ackland, John Shrapnel, Donald Sumpter.
