Felicia’s Journey

feliciasjourneyAtom Egoyan’s film is (as expected) different from the usual serial killer flicks because Bob Hoskins’s protagonist is not “evil” – but not really sane either obviously. The star does the role of a lifetime as the soft-spoken gourmet whose elegant surface hides the fact that he is a lonely man tortured by an obsession with his mother; he also secretly videotapes and then murders young women. This is indeed an awfully familiar genre, and Felicia’s search for her boyfriend is not exactly riveting, but Egoyan’s slow-moving work nevertheless has the power to unsettle and perhaps even enthrall viewers.

1999-Canada-Britain. 113 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Atom Egoyan. Novel: William Trevor. Cast: Bob Hoskins (Hilditch), Arsinée Khanjian (Gala), Elaine Cassidy (Felicia), Sheila Reid, Peter McDonald, Gerard McSorley.
