Behind Enemy Lines

IN WAR THERE ARE SOME LINES YOU SHOULD NEVER CROSS.

A case of déjà vu for Gene Hackman and audiences alike. 13 years ago, in Bat*21, he was shot down behind enemy lines – that was the Vietnam War, this time his character has to save fighter pilot Chris Burnett’s (Owen Wilson) ass when his plane is hit over Bosnia and he has to escape from vicious Serbian troops. Director John Moore has an earnest desire to create a sense of horror at war, but has no clue how to bring depth to the movie. Fast-paced action scenes and a thundering soundtrack are fun ingredients but realism is the first casualty.

2001-U.S. 106 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by John Moore. Cast: Owen Wilson (Chris Burnett), Gene Hackman (Leslie Reigart), Gabriel Macht (Stackhouse), Charles Malik Whitfield, Joaquim de Almeida, David Keith.

Trivia: Followed by two direct-to-DVD sequels, starting with Behind Enemy Lines II: Axis of Evil (2006).
