Wild Man Blues

wildmanbluesA somewhat different choice of topic for the director who achieved fame with two documentaries about laborers’ struggle to survive, Harlan County, U.S.A. and American Dream. Barbara Kopple hooks up with one of the most famous directors in cinema history – Woody Allen, who’s also a skilled clarinettist in a band that plays New Orleans-style jazz. We tag along with him and spouse Soon-Yi on a 1996 tour in Europe. Woody plays to enthusiastic crowds, is funny and self-willed, but also a person many would hate spending 105 minutes with. The film is a must for fans, merely interesting perhaps to others. Fascinating to see Woody’s parents in the ending; he has created this classic nebbish persona and suddenly you realize from where things originate…

1998-U.S. 105 min. Color. Directed by Barbara Kopple. Featuring: Woody Allen, Soon-Yi Previn.
