Laurel and Hardy’s Laughing 20’s

laurelhardyslaughing20sThis is one of Robert Youngsonā€™s last accomplishments, a compilation that celebrates the funnymen of the 1920s, Laurel and Hardy in particular. We get to see how their act started out and developed into two unforgettable characters. First half of the documentary is funnier but seeing their now classic short pieces remains a fascinating experience throughout the film. Those are interwoven with works by names most people have forgotten. Charley Chase, Max Davidson and Edgar Kennedy might not have been comic geniuses, but they had bright moments. Some of those ā€˜20s treasures starring Laurel and Hardy are on display here, including the ā€œpants-rippingā€, a visit to a construction site and the pie-throwing in Battle of the Century (1927).

1965-U.S. 90 min. B/W.Ā Produced and directed byĀ Robert Youngson.
