Atelier Bow-Wow founder Momoyo Kaijima will judge the AR House awards 2022
Japanese architect and educator Momoyo Kaijima graduated from Japan Women’s University in 1991 before establishing her architectural practice Atelier Bow-Wow with Yoshiharu Tsukamoto in 1992.
Atelier Bow-Wow are best known for their micro houses that slot into leftover or previously overlooked plots of land in urban Japan, including Split Machiya , Sway House, and Ani House in Tokyo, but have also completed cultural projects further afield such as the Four Boxes Gallery in Denmark.
Kaijima has taught at numerous institutions, including Harvard, University of Tsukuba and Delft University of Technology, and is currently professor of ‘architectural behaviorology’ at ETH Zurich, a study that integrates behaviours as elements into the process of spatial production. Through this approach, Atelier Bow-Wow seeks an intimate understanding of the relationship between inhabitants, objects, rooms and the built environment, informing their domestic spaces.
Kaijima received the RIBA International Fellowship in 2012, curated the Japan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2018, and received the Wolf Prize Laureate in Architecture 2022.

Launched in 2010, the AR House awards recognises originality and excellence in the design of dwellings. The house – a key rite of passage for architects – offers the potential for innovation and is critical to the ferment and crystallisation of new ideas. Looking for projects built in the last five years, AR House recognises creativity and originality, and ideas that push the type forward whatever the scale and construction cost.
