A screen adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist J.R. Moehringer’s book about his upbringing in 1970s Long Island; his useless father was always absent, but uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck) and the patrons at his bar became part of young J.R.’s education. A coming-of-age tale that offers very little to set it apart from all the others you’ve seen; Affleck has a lot of charm as the uncle, but his character is thinly drawn, which is typical of the film as a whole. Sweet and well-acted, but there isn’t a part of the story that will make you raise an eyebrow.
