The Emigrants

DRIVEN BY HOPE. BOUND BY LOVE.

In 1849, starvation and a hope for a better future for their children push Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson (Gustaf Skarsgård, Lisa Carlehed) into leaving Sweden for a long journey to Minnesota. In this shortened, diluted adaptation of Vilhelm Moberg’s massive four-novel project, the filmmakers present a story about a woman who finds it hard to accept her new country, and to resist the worst religious aspects of her culture. An attempt to make the story more relevant to modern audiences, but in spite of a decent cast and production values, the film largely fails to engage our emotions.

2021-Sweden-New Zealand-Norway-Denmark. 148 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Erik Poppe. Novels: Vilhelm Moberg. Music: Johan Söderqvist. Song: “Minnet av ett hav” (performed by Laleh). Cast: Lisa Carlehed (Kristina Nilsson), Gustaf Skarsgård (Karl Oskar Nilsson), Tove Lo (Ulrika), Sofia Helin, Lena Strömdahl, Laurence Kinlan.

Trivia: Original title: Utvandrarna. The novels were previously filmed as The Emigrants (1971) and The New Land (1972); Liv Ullmann, who played Kristina then, was offered a role in this new version but bowed out due to COVID concerns.
