EVERY WOMAN HAS A SECRET…
As her marriage looks increasingly hopeless, a romance novelist’s (Marisa Paredes) writing turns darker. Not one of Pedro Almodóvar’s greatest films, but an important part of his career, as this one became a point of transition from provocative farces to colorful melodramas, maintaining an aura of absurdity. Parts of the film also inspired later Almodóvar tales, not least Volver (2006). Paredes is fine in the lead as a writer on the verge of a nervous breakdown, wonderfully supported by Chus Lampreave and Rossy de Palma as a bickering mother and daughter duo. Not much substance here though.
