The Farmerā€™s Wife

Depressed widower Samuel Sweetland (Jameson Thomas) decides to start dating again and together with his housekeeper (Lillian Hall-Davis) makes up a list of potential future wives. A rare romantic comedy for Alfred Hitchcock who was trying different genres at this time. Itā€™s an adaptation of a popular play that looks far from remarkable today, featuring a story where much of the comedy is derived from the peculiar traits of the women Sweetland dates. Thereā€™s no mystery as to whom he really ought to marry. Gordon Harker is fun as a rugged servant, but it takes a little too long before the inevitable conclusion arrives.Ā

1928-Britain. Silent. 107 min. B/W. Directed byĀ Alfred Hitchcock. Play: Eden Phillpotts. Cast: Jameson Thomas (Samuel Sweetland), Lillian Hall-Davis (Araminta Dench), Gordon Harker (Churdles Ash), Gibb McLaughlin, Maud Gill, Louie Pounds.

Trivia: Remade as The Farmerā€™s Wife (1941).
