Malignant

A NEW VISION OF TERROR.

After the violent death of her abusive husband, Madison Lake (Annabelle Wallis) begins to have visions of people being killed, only to realize that the murders also take place in real life. James Wan’s return to horror after the first two Conjuring movies is nothing like them. Instead of ghosts, we get a deranged story about a twisted and shadowy figure called Gabriel who’s somehow connected to Wallis. Absolutely ludicrous, but Wan is clearly having a grand old time here, the horror getting a boost from tongue-in-cheek ingredients, stylish settings and an unusually inspired soundtrack; there’s even room for a Bryan Ferry song.

2021-U.S. 111 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by James Wan. Cast: Annabelle Wallis (Madison Lake/Emily May), Maddie Hasson (Sydney), George Young (Kekoa Shaw), Michole Briana White, Jean Louisa Kelly, Susanna Thompson.
