Summer of 85

In 1985, Alexis (Félix Lefebvre) is rescued at sea by another boy (Benjamin Voisin) after a sailing mishap and embarks on a romance with him that becomes increasingly intense. A groundbreaking young-adult writer’s work inspired this drama about immature love that takes a dark turn. It’s easy to sympathize with young Lefebvre who falls deeply for a person who doesn’t deserve him; some of the consequences are so outrageous they cause a shift in tone that won’t please everyone. Still, frequently endearing and nicely wrought, with a surprising (and even touching) use of a Rod Stewart classic.

2020-France-Belgium. 100 min. Color. Written and directed by François Ozon. Novel: Aidan Chambers (”Dance On My Grave”). Cast: Félix Lefebvre (Alexis Robin), Benjamin Voisin (David Gorman), Philippine Velge (Kate), Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Melvil Poupaud, Isabelle Nanty.

Trivia: Original title: Été 85.
