A documentary that introduces us to a human being who never asked to be at the center of an ongoing culture war. We spend a decade together with Erik, from when he was a teenager and still trapped in his female identity, through his transition, right up to the moment when he embarks on a pilgrimage walk in France, an attempt to bring himself out of a depression. The liberating and challenging aspects of a gender adjustment are portrayed; we also meet Martyna, Erik’s future wife, and his family who struggle with his situation over the years. The director’s experience in psychology may have helped her get close to her subject; she really finds a good story worth telling in all that footage and the results are engaging, warm and enlightening.
