The Sword in the Stone

TIRED OF LIVING IN A MEDIEVAL MESS… MERLIN USES ALL HIS MAGIC POWERS TO CHANGE A SCRAWNY LITTLE BOY INTO A LEGENDARY HERO!

Merlin the wizard decides to tutor a 12-year-old orphan, Arthur, who just might be destined for greater things. An exceptionally slight Disney film made in the same style as One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), offering lively adventures with Arthur and Merlin. The wizard’s magic powers turn them into different animals, but he also matches wits with the cackling Madam Mim. Those scenes are fun, but begin to feel protracted after a while. Still enjoyable, with an amusingly cranky relationship between Merlin and his owl Archimedes.

1963-U.S. Animated. 75 min. Color. Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman. Novel: T.H. White. Music: George Bruns. Songs: Richard M. Sherman, Robert B. Sherman. Voices of Ricky Sorenson (Arthur), Sebastian Cabot (Lord Ector), Karl Swenson (Lord Merlin), Junius Matthews, Martha Wentworth, Norman Alden.

Trivia: The director’s sons, Richard and Robert, also contributed to Arthur’s voice.
