Angel and the Badman

THE DRAMATIC STORY OF A GIRL IN A MAN’S WORLD WHO TAUGHT A KILLER THE REAL MEANING OF LOVE!

Wounded gunman Quirt Evans (John Wayne) ends up on a farm owned by a Quaker family, where he recovers – and falls in love with the daughter (Gail Russell). The first movie Wayne produced and starred in may feel familiar to anyone who’s ever seen Witness (1985); as expected, the gunman learns to respect the family’s faith and habits, even though the story throws reasons at him to return to his old life. Enjoyable, with an attractive performance by Russell and a good chase sequence. The film’s standout: Harry Carey as the veteran sheriff who keeps expecting to hang Wayne.

1947-U.S. 100 min. B/W. Produced by John Wayne. Written and directed by James Edward Grant. Cast: John Wayne (Quirt Evans), Gail Russell (Penelope Worth), Harry Carey (Wistful McClintock), Irene Rich, Bruce Cabot, Lee Dixon.

Trivia: Remade as a TV movie, Angel and the Badman (2009). Johnny Cash later wrote a song inspired by the film.
