Starship Troopers

A NEW KIND OF ENEMY. A NEW KIND OF WAR.

200 years from now, mankind is involved in a bloody intergalactic war with ”bugs”, big, hostile aliens; enthusiastic kids out of high school are joining the army. Paul Verhoeven joined forces with his RoboCop writer for this tough, bloody and satirical adaptation of a classic sci-fi novel; there are many similarities with that 1987 movie, including absurdly funny TV commercials. A lot of fascist symbolism in the portrayal of a society at war, with intense, effects-laden battle sequences. The young cast and characters are a weaker ingredient, but they eventually win us over.

1997-U.S. 129 min. Color. Directed by Paul Verhoeven. Screenplay: Edward Neumeier. Novel: Robert A. Heinlein. Music: Basil Poledouris. Cast: Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico), Dina Meyer (Isabelle ”Dizzy” Flores), Denise Richards (Carmen Ibáñez), Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Clancy Brown… Michael Ironside.

Trivia: Followed by two direct-to-video sequels, starting with Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004), as well as two animated films and a 1999-2000 animated TV series. Heinlein’s novel was also filmed as an animated Japanese miniseries in 1988.
