Neruda

A RENOWNED POET. AN UNKNOWN INSPECTOR. A LEGENDARY MANHUNT.

In the late 1940s, Chilean senator and poet Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) is considered a threat to the regime because of his communist beliefs and goes into hiding with his wife (Mercedes Morán), hunted by a government agent (Gael García Bernal). An unusual biography from a filmmaker who successfully moves between the real world and what’s made up; the latter part includes Bernal’s agent who tracks Neruda down to the mountains between Chile and Argentina. There’s a haunting quality to this handsome film, providing a tortured but epicurean portrait of the author.

2016-Chile-Argentina-France-Spain-U.S. 107 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Pablo Larraín. Cinematography: Sergio Armstrong. Cast: Luis Gnecco (Pablo Neruda), Gael García Bernal (Óscar Peluchonneau), Alfredo Castro (Gabriel González Videla), Mercedes Morán (Delia del Carril), Diego Muñoz, Pablo Derqui.
