Malcolm & Marie

MADLY IN LOVE.

A hotly debated film that reminded many of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966). Much like that classic, it is in stark black-and-white, focusing on a couple coming back home after a late night out, throwing themselves into an argument that lasts all night. Malcolm (John David Washington) is a budding director, so many of his rants reflect the current debate on identity politics in Hollywood, but the arguments also address the delicate process of using real life in your art. Often compelling because of its look and furious performances, but not much lies beneath the surface.

2021-U.S. 106 min. B/W. Written and directed by Sam Levinson. Cinematography: Marcell Rév. Cast: Zendaya (Marie Jones), John David Washington (Malcolm Elliott).

Trivia: Co-produced by the director and the stars.
