The Dig

NOTHING STAYS LOST FOREVER.

In 1939, as Britain prepares for war, a wealthy landowner (Carey Mulligan) invites an excavator (Ralph Fiennes) to examine ancient mounds on her estate. The story of one of the most famous archeological discoveries made in Britain is interesting to anyone who cares about history. This film dramatizes it in a handsome and engaging way, crafting soft-spoken and likable portraits of Pretty (who suffered from health issues) and Brown (a self-taught archeologist whose work risked being overshadowed). Well-acted, with a cute romance, but lacking spark as an emotional experience.

2021-Britain-U.S. 112 min. Color. Directed by Simon Stone. Novel: John Preston. Cast: Carey Mulligan (Edith Pretty), Ralph Fiennes (Basil Brown), Lily James (Peggy Preston), Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, Ken Stott.

Trivia: Nicole Kidman was reportedly first cast in Mulligan’s role.
