Idomeni

What does life look like in one of the camps where refugees come after trying to make their way to Europe? This documentary follows a few families in the Greek camp of Idomeni; they escaped the turmoil of the Syrian civil war and the rise of ISIS, and some of them also end up in Germany with the promise of a new life. In a low-key manner, we’re introduced to people in the camp who turn what should be temporary into the new normal as time drags on; they mourn the dead and try to move on. Touching at times; there’s a nice portrait of two teenage friends who are reunited in Germany. As a whole, the film is tender but a tad superficial.

2020-Sweden. 90 min. Color. Written and directed by David Aronowitsch.
