Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer) brings his new wife (Lily James) to his grand mansion Manderley, but she finds it impossible to escape the shadow of his first wife. An adaptation of the novel that tries to ignore Hitchcockās 1940 masterpiece. Opulently staged, with a good music score, the film presents its romance as a nightmare to survive, but James and Hammer are not engaging enough to make us really care. Kristin Scott Thomas is a fine Danvers, but some of the scenes that made the first movie shine are inert here.
