Shirley

As novelist Shirley Jackson (Elisabeth Moss) is struggling with a story inspired by a womanā€™s disappearance in 1946, a young couple (Odessa Young, Logan Lerman) move in with her and her husband (Michael Stuhlbarg). Susan Scarf Merrellā€™s novel is fictional, but based upon the ā€Haunting of Hill Houseā€ writerā€™s personal issues and the complicated nature of her marriage. The young couple unwittingly become target and muse. Deliciously wicked performances by the two leads in an uneven film that visually (and audibly) borrows ideas from Jacksonā€™s work; there are touches of dark comedy and horror.

2020-U.S. 107 min. Color. Directed byĀ Josephine Decker. Screenplay: Sarah Gubbins. Novel: Susan Scarf Merrell. Cast: Elisabeth Moss (Shirley Jackson), Michael Stuhlbarg (Stanley Edgar Hyman), Odessa Young (Rose Nemser/Paula), Logan Lerman (Fred Nemser), Victoria Pedretti, Orlagh Cassidy.
