The Dressmaker

SHE LEFT THE TOWN IN DISGRACE. NOW SHE’S BACK IN STYLE.

In the 1950s, successful dressmaker Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet) returns to her hometown in the Australian outback, hoping to reconnect with her mentally ill mother (Judy Davis). The director’s first movie in two decades is a colorful cocktail, putting some of mankind’s worst traits on display, but with a wild sense of humor. A great cast helps, including Winslet as the dressmaker who’s tormented by a nightmarish childhood accident. Lively, but the film’s changes in tone are so breakneck you’re likely to get seasick.

2015-Australia. 119 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse. Screenplay: Jocelyn Moorhouse, P.J. Hogan. Novel: Rosalie Ham. Cast: Kate Winslet (Myrtle ”Tilly” Dunnage), Judy Davis (Molly Dunnage), Liam Hemsworth (Teddy McSwiney), Hugo Weaving, Sarah Snook, Sacha Horler.
