The Old Guard

FOREVER IS HARDER THAN IT LOOKS.

When a Marine (KiKi Layne) survives having her throat slit by an enemy fighter in Afghanistan, she’s extracted by a group of warriors led by Andy (Charlize Theron) who tell her that they’re all immortal. The director’s first comic-book movie drags a little in the middle, but offers intense action and an intriguing immortality concept. It doesn’t hurt that it also does an excellent job of promoting women, people of color and gay characters. Theron and Layne are well cast as two opposites (in terms of age, temperament and philosophy) who need to work together.

2020-U.S. VOD. 125 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Screenplay: Greg Rucka. Comic Book: Greg Rucka, Leandro Fernández. Cast: Charlize Theron (Andy), KiKi Layne (Nile Freeman), Matthias Schoenaerts (Booker), Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Trivia: Co-produced by Theron.
