The Banker

DON’T PAY THE MAN. BE THE MAN.

In the early 1960s, Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie) goes into business with Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson); they’re very successful… but it all depends on white people not knowing the color of their skin. A reality-based story about a brilliant man who used a white front to manipulate a thoroughly rotten system. That touch of bravery makes it entertaining, along with the lead performances. Jackson and Nicholas Hoult are terrific as the cocky club owner and the ignorant front who has to learn how to come across as a savvy businessman. Lighthearted at times, but the ever-present racism provides darkness.

2020-U.S. 120 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by George Nolfi. Cast: Samuel L. Jackson (Joe Morris), Anthony Mackie (Bernard Garrett), Nicholas Hoult (Matt Steiner), Nia Long, Scott Daniel Johnson, Taylor Black… Colm Meaney.

Trivia: Co-produced by Mackie.
