Cats

WHO WILL WIN?

Victoria, a homeless London cat, is introduced to the Jellicles, a group of felines competing for a chance to be granted a new life. Based on one of the most successful stage musicals ever, partly inspired by the poetry of T.S. Eliot, the film was a bomb and suffers from an uninspired and clumsy CGI look. There are moments when the potential shows, but most of the time this treatment tends to highlight the musical’s worst traits – dull story and characters, uneven song score.

2019-U.S.-Britain. 110 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Tom Hooper. Screenplay: Lee Hall, Tom Hooper. Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber. Songs: ”Memory” (Trevor Nunn, Andrew Lloyd Webber), ”Mr. Mistoffelees” (Andrew Lloyd Webber), ”Beautiful Ghosts” (Taylor Swift, Andrew Lloyd Webber). Cast: Francesca Hayward (Victoria), Judi Dench (Old Deuteronomy), Idris Elba (Macavity), Jennifer Hudson (Grizabella), Laurie Davidson, Robbie Fairchild… Rebel Wilson, James Corden, Jason Derulo, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Ray Winstone.

Trivia: Co-produced by Hooper. The first release of the film contained several noticeable CGI glitches, forcing the studio to replace the prints sent out to theaters. The musical was previously filmed in 1998.

Razzies: Worst Picture, Director, Screenplay, Supporting Actor (Corden), Supporting Actress (Wilson), Screen Combo (”any two half-feline/half-human hairballs”).
