5 Flights Up

A COMING OF AGE STORY.

Brooklyn residents Alex and Ruth Carver (Morgan Freeman, Diane Keaton) are trying to sell their apartment; since they’re getting older it seems to be the sensible thing… but it’s not an easy decision. A film that keeps trying to create drama out of situations that don’t feel particularly realistic or relevant; the only purpose of those scenes is to present obstacles for the two leads. Still, Freeman and Keaton are a treat to watch as a couple who have been together for 40 years; flashbacks contribute to a richer impression of their lives. Slight but sweet, and amusing, with a nice feel for New York.

2015-U.S. 88 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Richard Loncraine. Novel: Jill Ciment (”Heroic Measures”). Cast: Morgan Freeman (Alex Carver), Diane Keaton (Ruth Carver), Cynthia Nixon (Lilly), Carrie Preston, Korey Jackson, Claire van der Boom.

Trivia: Released in Britain as Ruth & Alex.
