In Nightcrawler (2014), Dan Gilroy presented a very dark image of the media; here, he takes on the legal system in the shape of a lawyer who’s devoted his life to helping people who are victimized by courts that fail to give anyone a fair chance. Denzel Washington is a major reason to see the film, excellent as a man who isn’t easy to like and whose social handicap makes him a disaster in the courtroom. The story challenges his principles in a life-altering way; no great surprises, but still compelling. Colin Farrell is perfectly cast as a slick attorney who tries to understand Roman.
