In 1988, a dying hitman (Ben Foster) ends up running away from his former employer with a young prostitute (Elle Fanning) in tow. Mélanie Laurent’s first English-speaking film as a director is a dark drama-thriller that’s far less complex than writer Nic Pizzolatto’s TV series True Detective. The two main characters develop a tender bond, finding safety and comfort in each other, but their future looks grim. Foster and Fanning are fine, but the film never delivers enough tension or emotion; even the finale fails on that count.
