A SECOND CHANCE TO FIND THE TRUTH.
CIA veteran Evan Lake (Nicolas Cage) is still trying to find the terrorist who caused him irreparable harm during a torture session 22 years ago; now thereās a new lead. A complete failure, in every respect, a film that the studio ultimately took away from Paul Schrader. Itās a drab thriller without tension, most of it taking place in Romania. Cage delivers another over-the-top performance as an operative who suffers from dementia, but tries to hide it; a few scenes are unintentionally funny.
2014-U.S. 94 min. Color Widescreen. Written and directed byĀ Paul Schrader. Cast: Nicolas Cage (Evan Lake), Anton Yelchin (Milton Schultz), IrĆ©ne Jacob (Michelle Zuberain), Alexander Karim, Adetomiwa Edun, Geff Francis.
Trivia: Co-executive produced by Nicolas Winding Refn, who joined Schrader, Cage and Yelchin in publicly denouncing the studio version of the film. At one point, Refn was supposed to direct, with Harrison Ford in the lead. In 2017, Schrader defied the studio, recut the film from DVD copies and made a new version called Dark, not meant for official release.
