Shot at Bruce Springsteen’s New Jersey ranch, in a century old barn that fits an audience and a 30-man strong orchestra, the film has him performing his ”Western Stars” album, each number introduced by archive footage and segments shot in the Joshua Tree national park in California. Those segments give Springsteen a chance to elaborate on what he’s singing. All in all, the album and the movie convey the idea of an old stuntman coming back home; we get deserts and highways, traditional, nostalgic Americana with cinematic strokes. They complement each other and Springsteen’s vision nicely, but the film offers nothing unique of its own.
