Safety Not Guaranteed

WHAT WOULD YOU GO BACK FOR?

When Seattle Magazine writer Jeff Schwensen (Jake Johnson) decides to investigate the origins of a mysterious classified ad, he brings along two interns (Aubrey Plaza, Karan Soni), little dreaming that they’re in for an adventure. Colin Trevorrow’s directing debut didn’t cost much, but looks very professional. At heart this is a very human romantic comedy evolving out of an actual classified ad looking for time travelers that was published in 1997. Plaza and Mark Duplass are irresistible as a very odd couple, the intern who feels lost and the goofy time traveler who takes everything very seriously. A winning film about daring to take chances.

2012-U.S. 84 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced by Derek Connolly, Stephanie Langhoff, Peter Saraf, Colin Trevorrow, Marc Turtletaub. Directed by Colin Trevorrow. Screenplay: Derek Connolly. Cast: Aubrey Plaza (Darius Britt), Mark Duplass (Kenneth Calloway), Jake Johnson (Jeff Schwensen), Karan Soni, Jenica Bergere, Kristen Bell.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by the Duplass brothers.

Last word: “It took a while for me to build this trust, and he met me for lunch at Vermont, where I live, which was a good way to illustrate that I’m not necessarily a Hollywood douche bag. We got on, and I tried to explain what we were trying to do, that it was a love story, which he actually responded really well to. He’s certainly not a crazy guy in any way, but he is like Kenneth [one of the lead characters in ‘Safety Not Guaranteed’] in a lot of ways, and it’s funny how so much of his personality is really infused into that classified ad – in that he does carry a gun. Everywhere he goes, he’s always strapped. He had a gun when we met for lunch.” (Trevorrow on the man who wrote that classified ad, Den of Geek)
