Woman

An ambitious project, where the filmmakers conducted 2,000 interviews with women in 50 countries, working closely with NGOs that helped them find the right people. The approach is similar to what Yann Arthus-Bertrand did in an earlier documentary, Human (2015); a series of talking heads address the camera, telling us what their lives as women are like, in different places of the world. They touch on a multitude of issues, some of them difficult, but the filmmakers know how to transition smoothly into lighter subjects, creating a richer experience. Often enlightening when it comes to how women view and define themselves, not least mothers and widows who enter a new phase in life and suddenly have to ponder who they really are as individuals.

2020-France. 105 min. Color. Produced byĀ Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Jean-Yves Robin. Written and directed byĀ Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Anastasia Mikova.

Last word: “For many women, little by little, it became a form of introspection, and sometimes they released things and shared things that they were not themselves expecting to share. Sometimes, when that happens, you donā€™t know if it was a good thing or a bad thing. Sometimes the interviewee would say everything and then collapse. You are in front of her as a journalist, and you feel a responsibility, thinking, ‘I’ve gone too far.’ But what most of the women taught us is that while itā€™s difficult, it’s their decision, and that should be respected. Even though itā€™s difficult, itā€™s necessary. I think this is one of the main messages of the film: itā€™s essential to listen.” (Mikova, Cineuropa)
