In the middle of a custody fight, Alice (Ane Dahl Torp) grabs her kids without telling their father and goes on a holiday trip to the Canary Islands. Amanda Kernell followed her brilliant Sami Blood (2017) with another personal project, asking herself how far she would go for her children in a custody fight. Together with Dahl Torp, she explores the lead character’s desperate situation as Alice keeps painting herself into a corner. The typical tourist vibes of Tenerife are an effective contrast to the mother-daughter conflict. A relatable drama, even if far from every turn of the story feels convincing.

2020-Sweden. 94 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Amanda Kernell. Cast: Ane Dahl Torp (Alice), Sverrir Gudnason (Mattias), Tintin Poggats Sarri (Elina), Troy Lundkvist, Eva Melander, Johan Bäckström.
