Happy Birthday

Andréa’s (Catherine Deneuve) birthday celebrations are interrupted by the arrival of Claire (Emmanuelle Bercot), the unpredictable oldest daughter. On one level, you have to admire Bercot’s no-holds-barred performance as a mentally ill woman who refuses to understand her condition. On another level, her intolerable character is part of a family that considers itself to be free-spirited but actually needs extensive psychological help. The film’s sense of humor and attempts at charm hit a brick wall.

2019-France-Belgium. 101 min. Color. Written and directed by Cédric Kahn. Cast: Catherine Deneuve (Andréa), Emmanuelle Bercot (Claire), Vincent Macaigne (Romain), Cédric Kahn, Luàna Bajrami, Laetitia Colombani.

Trivia: Original title: Fête de famille.
