Emma.

HANDSOME, CLEVER, AND RICH.

In the early 1800s, Emma Woodhouse (Anya Taylor-Joy) tries to make a friend and the local vicar fall in love, but her matchmaking project is frequently challenged. Another adaptation of Jane Austen’s romantic comedy of manners, this one providing Taylor-Joy with a chance to shine as the 20-year-old who lives in a world that has ”very little to distress or vex her”. She combines beauty with cheek; the cast also provides us with an enjoyable performance by Miranda Hart as an enthusiastic, oddly endearing busybody. Unremarkable, but pretty and appealing, much like the 1996 version.

2020-Britain. 124 min. Color. Directed by Autumn de Wilde. Novel: Jane Austen. Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma Woodhouse), Johnny Flynn (George Knightley), Bill Nighy (Mr. Woodhouse), Mia Goth, Miranda Hart, Josh O’Connor.
