The Specials

The Intouchables (2011) directors deliver another heartfelt drama, this one inspired by their connection to two men who run separate associations caring for young autistic people. Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano first made a short documentary in 2015; here’s the dramatized story. Skillfully staged, its emotional aspects will either have audiences wipe tears from their eyes or annoy them (especially the part where a morose black teenager must learn how to take responsibility). Gets a tremendous boost from its cast, especially Vincent Cassel as the frequently overwhelmed Bruno.

2019-France. 114 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Olivier Nakache, Éric Toledano. Music: Grandbrothers. Cast: Vincent Cassel (Bruno Haroche), Reda Kateb (Malik), Bryan Mialoundama (Dylan), Hélène Vincent, Alban Ivanov, Benjamin Lesieur.

Trivia: Original title: Hors normes.
