A Dog’s Purpose

EVERY DOG HAPPENS FOR A REASON.

Audiences loved this movie about a puppy who is reincarnated several times, experiencing very varied lives over 50 years… but critics were less enthusiastic. Maybe they’re cat people? The film is undeniably sentimental and predictable, but in Lasse Hallström’s hands it nevertheless becomes a frequently endearing and engaging story. All the cute dogs are naturally the primary reason to see the movie, but the cast is also fine and the film’s theme of reincarnation is an understandably human and touching fantasy – surely, dogs must live longer than merely 12 years?

2017-U.S. 100 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Lasse Hallström. Novel: W. Bruce Cameron. Music: Rachel Portman. Cast: Dennis Quaid (Ethan Montgomery), Peggy Lipton (Hannah), John Ortiz (Carlos Ruiz), Kirby Howell-Baptiste, KJ Apa, Britt Robertson. Voice of Josh Gad.

Trivia: Bradley Cooper was the first choice for the dog’s voice. Followed by A Dog’s Journey (2019).
