The Dark Crystal

ANOTHER WORLD, ANOTHER TIME… IN THE AGE OF WONDER.

On a distant planet, two races are competing for power; a young Gelfling is told that he must heal an all-important Crystal… After the success of The Muppet Show, Jim Henson and his crew did something unexpected – an ambitious, dark sci-fi adventure with a puppet cast. Based on an idea conceived by Henson, the movie has become a cult item over the years. For me, the story and this world are challenging to get into, but whenever tedium sets in you can always admire the technical wizardry on display; Trevor Jones’s handsome music score is another bonus.

1982-Britain. 94 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Jim Henson, Frank Oz. Music: Trevor Jones. Performers: Jim Henson, Kathryn Mullen, Frank Oz, Dave Goelz, Brian Muehl. Voices of Stephen Garlick (Jen), Lisa Maxwell (Kira), Billie Whitelaw (Aughra), Barry Dennen.

Trivia: Co-produced by Henson. Followed by a prequel TV series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019).
