438 Days

In 2011, two Swedish journalists (Gustaf Skarsgård, Matias Varela) enter Ethiopian territory illegally to report on the connection between a Swedish oil company and atrocities committed in the area, but they’re caught and jailed… The two leads are very engaging as we follow their struggle out in the wilderness and later inside the rowdy Kaliti prison in Addis Ababa; their camaraderie keeps us hooked. The story strikes a blow for investigative journalism and highlights the irony of then-Foreign Minister Carl Bildt’s involvement. Well-crafted, even if it doesn’t build much tension.

2019-Sweden. 124 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Jesper Ganslandt. Screenplay: Peter Birro. Book: Martin Schibbye, Johan Persson. Music: Jon Ekstrand. Cast: Gustaf Skarsgård (Martin Schibbye), Matias Varela (Johan Persson), Josefin Neldén (Linnéa Schibbye), Fredrik Evers, Philip Zandén, Jesper Ganslandt.
