The Hole in the Ground

Together with her young son (James Quinn Markey), Sarah O’Neill (Seána Kerslake) moves to an old house in the country, little knowing that a huge sinkhole in the forest nearby will have a strange effect on them… The director’s feature film debut is a horror movie set in Ireland that seems to channel predecessors like The Omen, The Shining and even the same year’s Us. It may not have anything new to offer, and the last 15 minutes has its logical gaps, but the rural atmosphere is creepy and the relationship between mother and son turns convincingly unnerving.

2019-Ireland-Belgium-Britain-Finland. 90 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Lee Cronin. Cast: Seána Kerslake (Sarah O’Neill), James Quinn Markey (Chris O’Neill), James Cosmo (Des Brady), Kati Outinen, Simone Kirby, Steve Wall.
