Friday

A LOT CAN GO DOWN BETWEEN THURSDAY AND SATURDAY…

The director’s first film is a simple low-budget event that turned into a hit, introducing us to two unemployed layabouts (Ice Cube, Chris Tucker) in South Central who spend their Friday on the porch, watching the neighborhood. Underneath all the bad jokes and half-baked intrigue involving a local bully lies a message telling us to care about family and the neighborhood. John Witherspoon stands out as Ice Cube’s father, but the two leads grow rather tiresome.

1995-U.S. 89 min. Color. Directed by F. Gary Gray. Screenplay: Ice Cube, DJ Pooh. Cast: Ice Cube (Craig Jones), Chris Tucker (Smokey), Nia Long (Debbie), Tiny ”Zeus” Lister, Jr., John Witherspoon, Anna Maria Horsford… Regina King, Bernie Mac.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by Ice Cube. Followed by two sequels, starting with Next Friday (2000), and an animated TV series in 2007.
