Detour

HE WENT SEARCHING FOR LOVE… BUT FATE FORCED A DETOUR TO REVELRY… VIOLENCE… MYSTERY!

Pianist Al Roberts (Tom Neal) is headed to California where his girlfriend is trying to launch a career, but an unexpected death changes the journeyā€¦ One of the most famous films that Edgar G. Ulmer made has become perhaps the most classic example of ā€poverty rowā€ film noir. Itā€™s a thriller featuring a dumb guy and a dangerous dame who meet by chance and reluctantly become partners in crime. The lead performances are not exactly subtle, especially Ann Savageā€™s, but theyā€™re not dull. The script is often unbelievable, but this is nonetheless a tight little film, warts and all.

1945-U.S. 69 min. B/W. Directed byĀ Edgar G. Ulmer. Screenplay: Martin Goldsmith. Cast: Tom Neal (Al Roberts), Ann Savage (Vera), Claudia Drake (Sue Harvey), Edmund MacDonald, Tim Ryan, Esther Howard.

Trivia: Remade as Detour (1992).
