They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead

THE TRUE STORY OF THE LAST FILM FROM ORSON WELLES.

The same year when Morgan Neville made the critically celebrated Fred Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, he also took on Orson Welles and the fabulous story of how the director spent years trying to finish his last movie, The Other Side of the Wind, which was completed decades after his death. This film tries to explain the many setbacks that Welles suffered. A classic Hollywood tale, but what puts meat on the bones is the interviews with people in Welles’s life at the time and the rich archive footage of Welles himself, which add to a fuller picture of the man and his ideas. Alan Cumming serves as onscreen narrator, smoothly blending into the silver screen nostalgia.

2018-U.S. 98 min. Color-B/W. Directed by Morgan Neville. Narrated by Alan Cumming.

Trivia: Among those interviewed: Peter Bogdanovich, Danny Huston, Henry Jaglom, Cybill Shepherd and Frank Marshall. First shown at the Venice film festival, then released on Netflix.
