Happy Death Day

College student Theresa ”Tree” Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) wakes up hungover on what turns out to be her last day in life; she’s murdered by someone wearing a mask… but as soon as she dies, her day starts over. Here’s a terrific idea for a movie – a deliberate cross between Groundhog Day (1993) and Scream (1996), with a good sense of humor and exciting moments as our heroine keeps battling her killer (wearing a weird baby mask) over and over. She has to figure out who it is, and that’s part of the fun. Rothe is perfect in the lead as an ultimately resourceful and funny girl.

2017-U.S. 96 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Christopher Landon. Cast: Jessica Rothe (Theresa ”Tree” Gelbman), Israel Broussard (Carter Davis), Ruby Modine (Lori Spengler), Rachel Matthews, Charles Aitken, Rob Mello.

Trivia: Followed by Happy Death Day 2U (2019).
